On 15 January 2009, Captain Chesley ‘Sully’ Sullenberger landed US airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River, New York. All 155 passengers and crew survived. This salvaged aircraft is now housed at the Carolinas Aviation Museum and serves as a powerful symbol of safety in modern flight.
FRD were contracted to develop a master plan securing the future of Carolinas Aviation Museum as a sustainable cultural institution. A thematic framework was outlined, with all exhibition content designed to transform the existing aviation hangar into an engaging visitor experience. High-end multimedia technologies of theatrical lighting and audio-visual displays are used to activate the aircraft, and spatial planning is carefully managed to ensure seamless flow of visitors between enormous artefacts.
Encountering ‘The Miracle on the Hudson’, visitors are invited to engage with the iconic aircraft wreck and experience the dramatic story for themselves. This is achieved through touchscreen interactives, interpretive graphic panels, artefact displays and audio testimonies from passengers on board the flight.
