The brief asked for an interpretation of the life and work of Mary MacKillop using the original heritage classroom where she once taught as a vessel. The interpretive approach used the sense of place as a starting point to develop an exhibition structure that would respect the heritage fabric of the building and create a place for memory, reflection and contemplation. Richly layered with symbolism and metaphor, the displays are arranged around two seemingly monolithic structures that gradually reveal objects, archival material, multimedia components and graphics through carefully crafted openings.
