Located on Gadigal land, the heritage listed building, part of the Sandstone Precinct site, underwent a seven-year restoration and renovation. It represents outstanding architectural, cultural and social significance within the city. These heritage values are illuminated and enhanced by its revitalisation and the significantly increased public accessibility provided by the conversion.
FRD was engaged by Pontiac Lands Group in the role of Heritage Interpretation Consultant to imaginatively interpret the heritage values of the building. Following development of a highly detailed Heritage Interpretation Plan, and working closely with the design team and stakeholders, including Heritage NSW and City of Sydney, FRD were then commissioned to curate, design, document, manage and deliver a number of interpretation interventions and installations. These are located within the Capella Lounge and Farrer Place. FRD invited a small number of highly skilled and talented artists, producers and makers to join our team in the creative process and subsequent delivery of the interpretation.
As part of the interpretation, Judy Watson, a well-known and highly respected Waanyi artist, was commissioned to make eight artworks which feature in the entry and reception areas within the grandeur of the Edwardian Baroque style building.
