America: Painting a Nation was the most expansive survey of American painting ever presented in Australia

With over 80 works, ranging from 1750 to 1966, the exhibition covers more than 200 years of American art, history and experience. The exhibition features artists including Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Georgia O’Keeffe, James McNeil Whistler, Winslow Homer and John Singer Sargent. In developing this exhibition, FRD worked closely with the gallery staff and guest curator Dr McAuliffe to create a particular spatial set-up to guide the visitors through themed ‘rooms’. A dedicated circulation path, temporary furniture, new joinery, a distinct colour scheme and lighting enhanced the visitor’s experience of each ‘room’. Further to the exhibition, FRD planned and designed a children’s zone where a series of playful, mobile furniture helped facilitate creative activities for the gallery’s education program.
