The former Marine Corps Air Station El Toro is being transformed into the first great metropolitan park of the 21st Century—the Orange County Great Park. One of its keystone attractions is the Museum of Aviation and Heritage (MOHA), located in one of the former Marine Corps hangers.
FRD was engaged by the Architects WRNS Studio to develop a thematic plan which communicates the rich stories of farming and military history through a cohesive visitor experience. Where many aviation museums focus predominantly on the aircraft collection, FRD redirected the visitor’s attention to stories of people, bringing the collection to life and situating aviation in its social context. In line with this change of focus, and to increase the museum's appeal to a broader audience, state-of-the-art technology and theatrical techniques were included in the design.
