Newington Armory

Sydney Olympic Park

Many years of occupation by the Royal Australian Navy Armaments Depot have introduced a number of striking features to this landscape of wetlands, woodlands and grasslands on the southern banks of the Parramatta River and left a legacy of over 100 buildings dating from the late 1800s. These elements create a unique sense of place and visual identity, which underpin the interpretive strategy developed by Freeman Ryan Design in collaboration with the NSW Government Architect’s Office. The strategy was commissioned to provide an overall framework and specific recommendations for a staged implementation of interpretive media, exhibitions, tours, building reuse, facilities and education programs.
