Museum of Australian
Currency Notes

Reserve Bank of Australia, Sydney

As Australia’s central bank, the Reserve Bank of Australia is responsible for Australia’s monetary policy and for the production and issue of currency notes (coins are the responsibility of the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra). This museum tells the story of Australia’s currency notes in the context of the nation’s economic, political and social history. The layout of the exhibition is organised chronologically, beginning with the story of the discovery of gold and production of gold coins and ending with a display of current polymer notes. A large central structure housing backlit graphics, showcases and multimedia leads the visitor through the space.
